Getting outside this time of year isn’t ideal for most. With the Holidays coming, landscaping isn’t a high priority. Many people like to plan for next seasons garden projects or what they would like to change.
Gardening Off-season
- Get your mower ready for next year.
- If you have spring bulbs, get them in the ground. They still have a good chance of growing even if the ground is frozen.
- Grass seed germination is unlikely this time of year. If you must patch a bare spot, Sod can be installed anytime the ground isn’t frozen.
- Bed-edging can be done in December.
- Pull any weeds while you can.
- Cut down ornamental grass to help with new growth next spring.
- Top off thin mulch where needed.
- Remove broken branches from trees and shrubs.
What to watch out for
- Just because poison ivy has lost its leaves, it will still cause a rash.
- Stay off frozen grass to avoid damage to the crowns.
- Do not fertilize frozen ground.
- Deer will eat anything, especially Azalea, Rhododendron, Yews, and Arborvitae.
- Voles will also be on the hunt for food. They like roots and bulbs this time of year.
- Rabbits will also chew on the bark of some shrubs and small trees.
